Dec 28 Extended Great Western Route

DESCRIPTION: On Saturday, December 28, 2013, the planned ride is the Extended Great Western Loop; about 73 miles with about 7,300 vertical feet of climbing, mostly on the front end; in East County. However, since every ride we do is 'extended' we will now refer to this ride as the irresponsible Great
Western.  The plan is to be on the road by 8 A.M. departing from Starbucks in Rancho San Diego (2512 Jamacha Road) and heading out Willow Glenn Road to a right on Dahesa Road to right on Japatul Road through Guatay down the hill and left on Pine Creek Road (just before the bridge) and around to the Pine Valley store. Then we will ride Old Highway 80 (becomes Japatul Road) back up the hill through Guatay under I-8 to Lyons Valley Road and go left on Lyons Valley Road and continue around the Great Western Loop to Willow Glenn Road where we will turn left and return to the start at the intersection with Jamacha Road. We plan to stop at the Pine Valley Market and at the Lyon's Valley store (formerly with the donkey) in order to refuel. Those wanting to shorten the ride can merely go out and back to Descanso. Those wanting to extend the ride can continue from Pine Valley up and over Mount Laguna. This is a very beautiful, low-traffic, and challenging ride. The pace will be moderate. I hope you can make it for the 8:00 A.M. launch. At the finish of the ride those who wish can dine at the excellent Mexican restaurant across from the start/finish.

DIRECTIONS: Take I-5 South to SR94 East. Stay on SR94 for about 13 miles until it makes a right turn at a stoplight, but GO STRAIGHT there and the road becomes Jamacha Road. Turn left into the shopping center at the light at the intersection of Jamacha Road and Willow Glenn Road. The Starbucks is in the back of the shopping center next to PETCO. We typically park to the right of the first Stop sign you hit as you enter the shopping center. LINK

WEATHER: We are now into San Diego's colder months. Better to be warm and shed layers than be cold. We can experience 35 degree temperature changes from the time we roll out to the time we finish. Link to weather at the start.

BTW, this is a 8:00am start, not earlier
