Sure, there are many choices for a bicycle ride on New Year's Day, but do they include a climb up Sandia and up the infamous Los Gatos and across the Cleveland National Forest? Of course not. Think of this annual ride as a test of mettle, or rite of passage for the new year. The weather forecast looks like spring;
There are 3 routes in this offering. The first 2 start at 8:00 AM in the ever popular River Village parking lot in Bonsall here aka Daniel's Market parking lot;
1. The Out n' Back has 90 miles and an obscene amount of climbing. Check it out;
This ride goes across the forest road to a grand overlook of Lake Elsinore and the distant mountains and then turns around to re-trace the route back to Fallbrook and then down Mission to Bonsall. Except for the top of Fallbrook, there is no food and few reliable water stops along the way. Bring food and extra water.
2. The Loop Ride also has about 90 miles, but about 2,900 feet LESS climbing. Still a very substantial ride, but dropping down the Ortega Highway to Lake Elsinore (where there is a market) and a long flat stretch back to Temecula before popping up to Rainbow and the Live Oak / Green Canyon run back to Bonsall. (You might need to bring extra water on this route also.) This is the ride that I will be doing;
3. The Short Cut route is also a challenge with the full Forest Road experience, but less miles and climbing at 49 miles and 5,200 feet. For this ride park near Starbucks in Murrieta here;
If you start riding at 9:30 AM, you should be able to meet those of us humping up Los Gatos at the very top between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM or even at the intersection of Via Volcan and Tenaja Road. Here is the route;
